3.1.5 Mainframe Line Printer - IBM 6262 Model 022
|
The 6262 model 022 is a high speed impact line printer attached to a
block multiplexor channel on the mainframe computer located in the Data Center computer
room.
It prints on continuous fan folded pin-feed driven forms. The
vertical movement of the forms is controlled by the print application software and a FCB
(Forms Control Buffer). Text is printed on forms using a print band UCS (Universal
Character Set) and a ribbon. The printer speed varies depending upon the print application
characteristics. The printer has medium to low density Bar Code capability but it is not
currently supported.
Refer to Chapter
6 and Appendix C for
additional information on printers.
|
3.1.5.1 Line Printer Forms - IBM 6262 Model 022
- Appendix C contains a description of the forms currently available.
Forms are assigned a form number by the Data Centers Operations staff.
- The 6262 prints on single-ply, card stock, multiple part,
pre-printed, labels, carbon, and NCR (no carbon required) forms. It is capable of
producing machine readable input documents for an OCR (Optical Character Reader).
- Excluding the DEFAULT form for sysout classes "A" and
"E", a form is selected for printing via JCL parameters that specify a sysout
class, form number, and FCB. The UCS parameter is also specified if a non-default UCS is
desired. These JCL parameters will generate a message on the computer operator console
asking for a printer forms mount.
- The DEFAULT form (number 1181) is printed on 1 ply 14 7/8" X
11" green bar stock paper at 8 lines per inch (FCB P118), using the default print
band (feature #9502). To use the DEFAULT form, specify JCL parameter SYSOUT=n (where n =
sysout class "A" or "E" (do not specify form#, FCB, UCS).
|
3.1.5.2 Line Printer FCB (Forms Control Buffer) - IBM
6262 Model 022
- Refer to Appendix
C for a list of available FCBs.
- FCB controls the vertical movement of forms as they are printed. It
controls channel skipping, line spacing, and printing of data at 6 and 8 lines per inch.
- Data Center abstract TS007500.RU provides additional guidelines for
print applications.
- FCBs are created by the Data Centers Technical Service staff
upon request.
- An FCB is selected by the JCL FCB parameter. The operating system
JES2 (Job Entry Subsystem) default FCB P118 does not require a JCL parameter to select it
when printing to sysout classes "A" and "E". FCB P118 prints on a form
length of 11 inches at 8 lpi.
|
3.1.5.3 Line Printer UCS Print Band - IBM 6262 Model 022
- The printer supports 10 CPI (characters per inch) print bands. The
print band feature reflects the UCS (Universal Character Set) capability. The maximum
print line length is 132 contiguous characters. The recommended character height is
.105". We currently use 079" and .095" print bands.
- The print band is operator mounted upon request via the JCL UCS
(Universal Character Set) parameter.
- The DEFAULT UCS print band (feature #9502, part #6475398) consists of
64 unique characters (alpha/numeric and common special symbols) to support the majority of
print applications. It prints a character height of .079 inch. Do not code the JCL UCS
parameter to select the default print band.
- A TN UCS print band (feature #9507, part #6475410) is available for
special print applications. It consists of 128 unique characters (alpha/numeric and many
special symbols) for complex print applications. It prints a character height of .095 inch
and works best with a FCB that prints at 6 lpi (not 8 lpi). Refer to Chapter 6 for additional information
on using the TN print band.
- Contact the Data Center Operations staff for print band
character set support.
|
3.1.5.4 Line Printer Ribbon - IBM 6262 Model 022
|
A General Purpose or High Contrast Nylon ribbon will normally be
mounted on the printer. The operator will mount the other ribbons as requested per
standard operating procedures.
- General Purpose - An average quality ribbon used for production print
applications.
- High Contrast Nylon - A high quality ribbon used for production print
applications.
- Polyester (Mylar) - A high quality ribbon for Bar Code applications.
Bar code printing requires a print band brush and interposer which are maintained by the
Data Center.
|
3.1.5.5 Line Printer Speed - IBM 6262 Model 022
| Printer speed depends on the UCS print band type, forms design, and
FCB usage. The print speed using the DEFAULT UCS print band (feature #9502) is about 1840
lpm (lines per minute). When using the TN UCS print band (feature #9507), the speed is
about 1115 lpm. |

|
Thickness: The measurement includes the sum of all parts of a form
including any carbons. Single-ply forms are .003 inch (15 lb.) or heavier. OCR paper stock
should be single-ply bond 20 to 24 lb. for best results. Card stock should be about .007
inch.
Number of parts: 5/6 part forms may result in poor quality. Do not
use multi-ply forms for OCR printing. For OCR print, use 20-24 lb. (75-90 gm/sqm) OCR bond
single-ply.
Width: The measurement includes the pin feed strips on the side.
Forms wider than 15.9 inch (405 mm) have limited horizontal venire adjustment. Also the
first print position will always be 15.4 inches (392 mm) from RIGHT edge of the paper as
forms width increases to maximum dimension. This means the printer is restricted when
printing on the left side of the form.
Length: Forms can be as short as 3 inches long if they are packaged
to stack at the printer 2-up. That is 6 inches from fold to fold. Forms longer than 14
inches, up to 17 inches, can be accommodated with the printer unit's doors open, if a
special option is installed.
